"An increased SALT deduction built into the sweeping tax and spending law enacted this month by President Donald Trump could make taxes a little easier to swallow for Illinois residents.

The deduction for state and local taxes will increase to $40,000 from $10,000, which could mean significant savings on federal income taxes for 2025. Illinois, which has among the highest property taxes in the nation, was one of the states hardest hit when the SALT deduction was capped at $10,000 in 2017.

“People blow through that $10,000 cap very quickly,” says David Hughes, a partner at law firm Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton."
